BIKE SHARING IN ITALY
Sharing mobility in Italy is a growing sustainable practice which only began a few years ago. Bike sharing, car sharing, and carpooling are methods to help the environment by lessening traffic and CO2 emissions.
Bike sharing, in particular, is a popular and cheap mode of transportation in Italian cities. One example is Uber's electric bike sharing service called “Jump.” The vehicles are pedal-assisted electric bikes that are only present in Rome in Italy. The service uses a “free floating” approach in which the bikes are not placed in stations, but rather on the side of the road in open space.
Other cities across Italy use Bicincittà, the most popular bike sharing service in the country with over one hundred municipalities which assume a different name. More popular services are BikeMi and Mobike which are located in Milan. Rates for these services are set on the designated phone app and vary by the city.
Bike sharing has many benefits, environmentally and other. It reduces gas emissions which are harmful to the environment and encourages the use of public transportation. The active part of transporting oneself by bike motivates a healthier lifestyle. Lastly, the sharing aspect of the service creates a more cooperative and tighter community.
